Summer vs All-Season Tires: Which Should You Buy?

May 31st, 2023 by

Now that the warmer weather has arrived, let’s talk summertime tire etiquette. Most of us roll through each season with all-season tires because it’s less of a hassle to make the swap. But should you really?

Let’s discuss the difference between the two so you know how to order your next set of tires.

What are Summer Tires?

Summer tires have a specific rubber compound that is made to grip on both wet and dry roads, for warmer temperatures.  These tires are typically quiet and are made to maximize contact with the road. The tread design generally features fewer grooves, large tread blocks and stiff sidewalls; giving drivers better control, stability, and braking capabilities when the roads are dry and hot but also wet from the summer rain. The rubber in summer tires is not made to stay flexible during cooler temperatures and can become dangerous if driving in temperatures below 45 degrees. These tires are mostly preferred for sporty cars vs. all-season tires.

What are All-Season Tires?

All-season tires are built to provide a level of performance in all weather conditions by using a compound and tread pattern design that will handle all settings if temperatures don’t get extremely hot or extremely cold. Typically, these are ideal for drivers who live in climates where both winters and summers are relatively mild. All-season tires typically last longer than summer tires and reduce the need for frequent tire changes but they don’t handle as well in extreme heat as summer tires do.

What Tire is Right for Me?

This decision really comes down to where you live, what you encounter on the roads and how you drive your Jaguar.

If you experience mild temperatures all year round, then all-season tires would work just fine. If you experience hot summers where the pavement cracks under the sun, you might want to consider summer tires for optimum driving.

Summer and All-Season Tires Fun Facts

  • Summer performance tires are not your only option for summer tires. Some Jaguar owners will want to consider ultra-high performance (UHP) tires since they are better equipped to handle the enhanced power levels
  • All-season tires also offer lower road noise and longer tread life
