WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HYBRID AND A PLUG-IN HYBRID (PHEV)?

HYBRID

  • A vehicle is a hybrid if it’s 100% gasoline-fueled but doesn’t rely solely on its gasoline engine for propulsion (defined as the action of driving or pushing forward). Hybrids have electric motors that sometimes power the car in order to delay the gasoline engine and save fuel. At times, both systems work together for added power. Electric motors function as generators when you press the brake.
  • Hybrids get energy at the same time from a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The engine and motor work together to power the car. The engine also uses gasoline to help recharge the battery which powers the electric motor.
  • Hybrids use gasoline engines to keep batteries charged as you drive. There is no need to plug them in.

PLUG-IN HYBRID (PHEV)

  • PHEV’s use a gasoline engine and an electric motor, but in different ways. A plug-in hybrid primarily uses its electric motor, which is powered by the battery. A plug-in hybrid won’t use gas until the battery runs out of power. A plug-in hybrid uses its engine as a backup plan.
  • PHEV’s can be plugged into a 120-volt household outlet or a 240-volt charging unit (or wall charger). A plug in-hybrid can be driven on pure electric power without burning any fuel.
  • A PHEV has a much larger battery and a means to recharge it using an external power source. A PHEV acts like an electric vehicle with the gasoline engine not being used when it’s battery has to charge. The engine comes on when the battery runs down which allows the vehicle to continue as a regular gasoline hybrid. It also uses regenerative braking to save fuel.

Charging Your Jaguar: How and Where?

With tens of thousands of convenient public charging stations in North America, they are easy to locate via the standard navigation system in the Jaguar I-PACE vehicle. AC Level 2 chargers are most common, while DC Level 3 chargers are much faster and can charge an I-PACE up to an 80% charge in less than 45 minutes. Many public chargers are free, or offer easy access, with credit cards, PayPal®, Google Pay™ and Apple Pay® accepted at most locations. Signing up for a free ChargePoint account will also give you access to several of the major charging networks making public charging even easier.

To find a public charging station, simply use the navigation system in the Jaguar I-PACE. It will locate the ones closest to you, closest to your destination, or along your route, and provide directions. Once you arrive at the charger, turn off your I-PACE vehicle, open the charging port, plug the charging cable into the port, and then activate the charger with your ChargePoint card or other form of payment, just like a gas station pump. Once you’ve started to charge the I-PACE, you’ll be able to follow the charging progress on your smartphone with the Jaguar InControl® Remote™ app.

To charge the Jaguar I-PACE, it can be plugged in directly to a regular three-prong electrical socket using the Level 1 cable that comes standard with the I-PACE. For faster charging, the Jaguar I-PACE can also charge up to 7kW on a compatible 240-volt Level 2 home charger, which can fully recharge the vehicle in 12.6 hours. When you get home, simply plug your I-PACE into your Level 2 home charger and start each day with up to 234 miles of range. You can also use the Jaguar InControl Remote app to precondition your I-PACE – to heat or cool the interior while it is still plugged in to the charger – and to set timed charging so you can take advantage of the lower electricity rates that many utility companies offer at night.

Using a Jaguar-recommended Level 2, 240-volt home charger, the I-PACE can be fully charged overnight, ready to tackle a typical 30-mile commute the next day. So just like plugging in your mobile phone to charge overnight, charging your I-PACE should become part of your nightly routine.

Charging a plug-in electric vehicle can cost significantly less than refueling with gas or diesel. And you can reduce this cost further by charging at home instead of relying on a public charge point. Every home charging point from our recommended partners comes smart enabled, meaning you can conveniently activate and deactivate your charging progress straight from your phone.

For the ultimate in convenience, charge your vehicle overnight* using a wall-mounted Level 2, 240-volt home EV charger. Plugging it in at home takes only a few seconds.

Jaguar recommends the new ChargePoint Home Flex home charger. With adjustable amperage (up to 50 amps) and the ability to add up to 37 miles of range per hour, ChargePoint Home Flex is one of the most powerful home chargers available.*

With charging speeds up to nine times faster than a standard outlet, Home Flex also offers handy features, including reminders and scheduled charging. Please note the speed of charging is largely determined by the source of the power supply and is ultimately limited by the maximum capability of the vehicle’s onboard charger.

Maintenance/Service of Your All-Electric Jaguar

Having your vehicle serviced and maintained at the specified interval is critical to maintaining its long-term durability. Failure to do this may invalidate the warranty under certain circumstances. WARNING: Do not do any repairs on the vehicle yourself. Electrical cables and/or components that have come loose may only be corrected by an authorized Jaguar workshop. Schedule service today!

Compared to a vehicle with an internal combustion engine, electric vehicles require less maintenance as they have fewer moving parts. In other words, there is less that can wear out.

We wouldn’t recommend towing the Jaguar I-PACE. In general terms, if you need to move or recover the vehicle, you must always use a transporter or a trailer specifically designed for that purpose. However, should you find yourself stuck in a particularly dangerous location and there’s no alternative, be sure to tow it for no more than 500 yards at a very slow speed.

Complimentary scheduled maintenance coverage for all new Jaguar models covers factory recommended scheduled maintenance as detailed in the Passport to Service for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first. A service interval indicator will appear to tell you when necessary vehicle maintenance needs to be scheduled. Consult your Passport to Service schedule. In order to receive scheduled vehicle maintenance, you must bring your vehicle to an authorized Jaguar Retailer within 1 month or 1,000 miles of the scheduled maintenance interval. Customers who do not bring their vehicle to a Retailer within the required time for scheduled maintenance may not receive the missed interval service.

The Passport to Service’s Maintenance Schedule Table describes the service and maintenance to be performed on your vehicle. Jaguar may publish updates to your Retailer for any changes to the maintenance schedules published in the Passport to Service. Wear and tear items (e.g., brake pads and windshield wiper blades) are excluded.
