HOW TO CHECK CAR OIL
Motor oil is the lifeblood of your Jaguar, and you should always make sure there’s the right amount and that it’s changed regularly. Driving while low on oil could do some serious damage and leave you calling for a tow around Naperville.
How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car
Some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors — check your manual for how to read yours if that’s the case. For all other vehicles, they use a traditional dipstick that is pretty easy to read
If you’re checking the oil manually, simply follow these steps:
- Park your vehicle on level ground, turn it off, and give the engine time to cool.
- Open the hood and find the oil dipstick.
- Pull the dipstick out from the engine.
- Wipe off any oil from the end; we need it clean.
- Re-insert the dipstick all the way back in, then pull it out.
- Examine both sides and see where the oil level is at.
All dipsticks have a way of indicating the correct oil level. Sometimes there is a crosshatched area that’s considered a “good” zone. Other time there’s a minimum line or two lines — either way, it should be pretty clear if you need to add more oil.
When topping off your oil, be sure to buy the grade recommended in the owner’s manual. You’ll want to remove the oil filler cap and then add gradually, checking as you go. And remember, a car shouldn’t be burning oil. If you’re running low, it’s time for a trip to the service center.
